Jean-Marie Léger, better known as Doctor Flake, is a French composer and DJ whose creative universe has revolved around sampling, drum machines, and synthesizers since 2002. Between 2004 and 2022, he released eight albums rooted in a trip-hop aesthetic, while multiplying collaborations with a wide range of artists including Vale Poher, Miscellaneous, Mr Yaz, Chill Bump, H-Burns, Black Sifichi, Awon, Christine Ott, Ira Lee, Malika, DJ Low Cut and DJ Pee. Over the years, he has also shared the stage with major names such as Bonobo, Paul Kalkbrenner, Laurent Garnier, Morcheeba, Kid Koala, Chinese Man, Jennifer Cardini, DJ Shadow, DJ Krush, and Wax Tailor, among others.
In 2019, while working on a remix of the track Cinema (the Cinema Dub Version), a new creative horizon opened up. His music began to pick up pace, driven by percussive, evolving rhythms (House, Dub House, using Roland TR-909, TR-808 and TR-606 drum machines). The sound grew richer, embracing more electronic textures and timbres—analog bass, synthesizers—while melodies became shorter and more repetitive, gradually shifting towards a more hypnotic, dance-driven style. This evolution led to a series of singles (Maasai, Hands, Winterness, Honolulu, Cinema Dub Version) and remixes (Kutiman, Ayyuka), paving the way for COLORS (2024), his ninth album. The record marks a deeper dive into electronic music, infused with Maghrebian, African and Middle-Eastern traditional influences.
A long-time advocate of performing live, Doctor Flake expanded his artistic palette in 2020 with a new DJ-set formula that alternates—and sometimes merges—electronic music with traditional sounds. Influenced by DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Andy Weatherall and Laurent Garnier, he nourishes a boundless musical culture, which he channels during his sets to stay coherent, fluid, and always tuned in to the audience’s energy. The result: a progressive, immersive, and dance-inducing journey that crowds have wholeheartedly embraced.
While his music had already been used in film and television (After by Géraldine Maillet, 2011; Mayfair Witches on AMC, 2023), it had not yet been featured on stage. This changed in 2022, when he began composing original scores for theatre, notably for Les Vilains Petits, Camarades and Frisson, directed by Juliette Reydellet (Cie Figure).
